Before the Spotlight: The Journey and Predebut Days of Song Kang

Long before he earned global acclaim, dominated streaming charts, and earned the moniker “Son of Netflix”, South Korean actor Song Kang lived a quiet life far away from flashing cameras and red carpets. Growing up in Suwon, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea, his early years were shaped by a creative household, intense shyness, and a winding path of self-discovery before he finally found his calling in front of the camera.

A Creatively Inclined Childhood

Born on April 23, 1994, Song grew up in a family with strong ties to the arts and athletics. His father was an artistic gymnast, while his mother worked as a piano teacher. Surrounded by this environment, young Song developed early hobbies that would follow him into adulthood, including learning to play the piano.

Despite growing up around physical discipline and artistic expression, Song was famously introverted during his school years at Songpa Middle School and Changhyun High School. Friends and peers often described him as deeply shy, awkward in social settings, and reserved—a stark contrast to the magnetic, expressive screen presence he exhibits today.

The Turning Point: Discovering a Passion for Acting

After graduating from high school, Song moved to Seoul to pursue higher education, enrolling in the Department of Film and Arts at Konkuk University. Living alone for the first time in the bustling capital brought a profound sense of isolation, which he famously combated by keeping personal diaries to reflect on his strengths and shortcomings—a habit that helped build his self-esteem.

It was during his university years that Song first caught the acting bug. Encouraged by his father—who told him simply to “go for it” if it was something he truly liked—Song joined an acting academy. His initial classes, however, were filled with self-doubt. He has recalled how he would frequently laugh out of shyness when performing in front of classmates, often questioning on his way home whether acting was truly meant for him. Rather than quitting, he leaned into the challenge, developing a fierce determination to master the craft.

Turning Down the Idol Track

As his physical stature and striking visuals caught attention during his college years, Song faced a major crossroads. He was scouted multiple times by K-pop idol agencies, offering him a fast-track entry into the fiercely competitive music industry.

However, Song firmly turned down the offers. Recognizing that his passion lay strictly in storytelling and character portrayal rather than singing and dancing, he chose to stay the course toward becoming a dedicated dramatic actor.

Stepping Into the Industry

In December 2016, Song officially signed with his longtime agency, Namoo Actors. This milestone marked the end of his quiet student days and laid the groundwork for his professional debut in 2017 with a supporting role in the romantic-comedy series The Liar and His Lover.

Looking back at his predebut era, Song’s journey from a shy, introverted student in Suwon to an international acting star highlights a path built on quiet perseverance, self-reflection, and an unwavering commitment to his true passion.
