The Man Behind the Mentor: Unpacking the Journey of Dr. Vikas Divyakirti
When millions of aspirants across India begin their grueling journey to crack the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Examination, one name inevitably echoes through the study hubs of old Rajinder Nagar and Mukherjee Nagar: Dr. Vikas Divyakirti.
Famous for his eloquence, profound depth of knowledge, and viral lectures on social and political issues, he is a household name. However, a common point of curiosity and occasional confusion surrounds his actual background: Is Vikas Divyakirti an IAS officer?
The short answer is no, he is not currently an IAS officer, though he did successfully clear the civil services exam and briefly serve as a civil servant before choosing a completely different path.
From Clearing the UPSC to Resigning the Uniform
Born on December 26, 1973, in Bhiwani, Haryana, Vikas Divyakirti pursued an extensive academic path. He earned multiple degrees from the University of Delhi, including a Bachelor of Arts in History, a Bachelor of Laws (LLB), and advanced degrees—culminating in a Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)—in Hindi Literature. He also qualified for the UGC NET-JRF and worked briefly as an assistant professor at Delhi University.
In 1996, at the age of 23, Divyakirti attempted the notoriously difficult UPSC Civil Services Examination for the first time. He cleared it on his very first attempt, securing an All-India Rank (AIR) of 384.
Following his success, he was allotted to the Central Secretariat Service (CSS) of the Government of India, serving as a section officer in the Department of Official Language under the Ministry of Home Affairs in New Delhi.
However, the rigid bureaucracy and slow-moving environment of government administration did not align with his true calling. Driven by a deeper passion for teaching, intellectual discourse, and mentoring youth, he made the bold decision to resign from his government post just months later.
The Birth of Drishti IAS
Stepping away from government service could have been the end of a traditional career, but for Divyakirti, it marked the genesis of an educational movement. In November 1999, he founded Drishti IAS, a coaching and mentoring institute in Delhi designed to guide civil service aspirants—with a historic focus on supporting students from Hindi-medium backgrounds who often faced structural disadvantages.
Over the decades, Drishti IAS expanded from a modest classroom into a massive educational ecosystem spanning multiple cities like Jaipur, Prayagraj, and Lucknow, alongside a massive digital footprint. Today, Dr. Divyakirti is recognized less as an ex-bureaucrat and more as India’s preeminent UPSC mentor, author, and educator.
Pop Culture and Public Footprint
Dr. Divyakirti’s influence extends far beyond the traditional classroom. In recent years, he crossed over into mainstream popular culture:
- Digital Educator: His YouTube channels reach millions of viewers, transforming complex sociopolitical topics, philosophy, and literature into accessible, thought-provoking public discourse.
- Cinematic Appearance: He appeared as himself in Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s acclaimed 2023 biographical drama film 12th Fail, which sheds light on the realities of the UPSC journey and features themes deeply intertwined with the struggles of civil service aspirants.
While he earned the credentials of a civil servant decades ago, Dr. Vikas Divyakirti ultimately traded a single government office chair to shape the futures of thousands of prospective public servants across India.
