Johannes Pietsch: The Voice Uniting Pop and Opera on the Global Stage
Johannes Pietsch (born April 29, 2001), widely known by his stage name JJ, is an Austrian singer and songwriter who captured international acclaim by winning the Eurovision Song Contest. Blending classical vocal mastery with contemporary pop sensibilities, Pietsch has quickly emerged as a trailblazing young artist in modern European music.
Early Life and Global Roots
Born in Vienna, Austria, to an Austrian father and a Filipino mother, Pietsch spent the majority of his childhood growing up in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. This multicultural upbringing exposed him to a diverse spectrum of sound early on. Through family karaoke gatherings, he developed an affinity for mainstream pop music, while his father introduced him to the rich, dramatic world of opera.
In 2016, Pietsch and his family moved back to Vienna. Dedicated to honing his natural talent, he pursued rigorous classical training, attending the prestigious opera school of the Vienna State Opera before continuing his studies at the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna. Because of his background and international moves, he became multilingual, speaking German, English, and Tagalog.
Stepping Into the Spotlight: Television Beginnings
Before achieving mainstream stardom, Pietsch tested his abilities on several prominent competitive television platforms:
- The Voice UK (2020): After narrowly missing the application deadline for The Voice of Germany, Pietsch auditioned for the ninth series of The Voice UK. With the guidance of coach will.i.am, he advanced successfully to the Knockout rounds.
- Starmania (2021): The following year, he returned to Austria to compete in the fifth season of the revived talent show Starmania, securing a spot in the initial final shows.
These experiences laid a strong foundation for his stage presence, preparing him for the massive international audience he would soon face.
Eurovision 2025 Victory
Pietsch’s career reached a defining milestone on January 30, 2025, when the Austrian broadcaster ORF announced him as the country’s representative for the Eurovision Song Contest. Performing under the moniker JJ, he debuted the song “Wasted Love,” which he co-wrote alongside Austrian artist Teodora Špirić and producer Thomas Thurner.
